As far as I’m concerned, there are two different kind of authors on jalopnik: the genuinely good ones, including but not limited to Jason Torchinsky, doug demuro, and Tavarish. These authors have distinct writing styles, and it is easy for one to identify who wrote what. Then there are the authors who are more or less interchangeable, and bring absolutely nothing unique to the table. It is of my opinion that the authors in the latter group are the ones who control the vast majority of Jalopnik’s content. Patrick George. Raphael orlove. Travis okulski. Damon something that starts with an L.Others who write articles so bland, I cannot even identify them. In addition, I am sick of these authors spamming the front page with shared crap.
why can’t jalopnik hire more demuros and torchinskys
This whole thread was satire.

I actually think Orlove is a really dedicated jalop.

“As far as im concerned”
Key words.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:00 |

Yes. But he keeps sharing content that lowers the quality of jalopnik
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:03 |

Meh. Don't like, don't click. I don't mind the spamming—it means I don't need to go anywhere else. If it hasn't been shared, it usually doesn't interest me.

I actually disagree with the Raph inclusion as well. He does share out some filler once in a while, but his articles are solid. PG too actually. There are a few who don’t have the gift of writing.
Then again it is at it’s heart a blog. There are a whole lot worse blogs out there. And of course, you can do what I do and just not go to the FP almost ever
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:11 |

Also, does this count as shit stirring?
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:12 |

Seriously? Patrick George is one of the most thorough writers on here. Tavarish’s “Why buy...” articles are often scary.

It’s almost as if these guys make more money if they post more content that generates more pageviews. Like, if Damon shared an article by Raphael then Raphael would get more pageviews and Damon would get some pageviews as well. Weird.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:13 |

I don’t think he was referring to grammar. But just that this is solely your opinion.

Can we get rid of the bad oppo authors?

I guarantee you that is part of it.

![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:22 |

Several things come to mind.
Jalopnik is part of the Gawker network. You have to pay the piper, you have to share across various other sites. That’s the reality of being part of a media network. Same reason you see Disney crap pop up on ESPN or ABC, they own them.
Jalopnik is a news site, not all articles can be fanciful or oddball (bless Torch’s heart, we love him) and have to actually bring us factual news about cars. Personally I think Patrick, Travis, etc. do a damn good job of that. Not just kissing ass, I am a writer as well and it’s not easy.
Yes there are items on the FP that aren’t car related, see the 1st bullet. I would venture to say that a lot of people who are into cars think planes and military stuff is cool. I do, was actually way more into F-14s than Ferraris when I was little.
Just my .02. I’m sure there is an element of “if you don’t like it, go read something else” that could be tossed out there as well, but I’ll leave that to others.

Mmmm thank you, I was getting thirsty
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:24 |

Just skip over what you don’t want to read. Some people probably prefer opposite writing styles to what you like. What if the majority on here didn’t like the style of the authors you do like and they got rid of them? It goes both ways. Take the (what you consider) good with the (what you consider) bad.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:24 |

Poor satire.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:30 |

Isnt the number one rule of oppositelock to be excellent to each other? I don't read every article that pops up on the front page, I just ignore the ones that I am not interested in. If there were more articles ignored than read, then I would need to find another site to read and there would be no harm no foul. However, there is more than enough to keep me interested and oppo will always be where I spend more time reading anyways.

Over the years, Jalopnik has turned into a more transportation focused site rather than purely cars, which is perfectly fine by me. I don’t see the need to object to the sharing of posts from Truckyeah and FoxtrotAlpha, because it gives us insight into other parts of the automotive/vehicular world apart from just cars.
Also, remember that Jalopnik is part of the Gawker Media network - Kinja’s purpose to execute the meaning of that word. The clicks make the monies. If you don’t like it, don’t click.
And frankly, I think most of the articles written by the Jalopnik authors are pretty competent and make for interesting readings across all different sorts of vehicular news.

Only thing I take umbrage with are the most extreme of the cliclbait headlines. Other than that, anything I find boring, I don’t read.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:40 |

PSA - Links are easier to scroll though than iPhone screenshots, and still convey the same message.
I agree with you that some of the articles and shared content recently seems a little awkward. Maybe it’s a slow news week, and they’d rather share something than nothing?
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:42 |
|
Same scenario though. It’s kinda hard to backtrack and claim IT’S JUST SATIRE when 1. It wasn’t funny and 2. You responded genuinely to about half the comments before realizing it wasn’t going your way and now suddenly it’s (rather poor) “satire.”
I’d love to give you the benefit of the doubt, but really?
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:43 |

Truckyeah is about automobiles, bad example...But foxtrotalpha and flightclub on the other hand....
But yeah you have a point, they don’t bother me either.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:45 |

If you need to explain that it was satire, it’s pretty poor satire.
I’m not a fan of all the authors either, but I just mentally post the Jennifer lawrence ok .gif and move on. No sweet clicks for you!

Poe’s law. Don’t satire too well or no one will get it.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:51 |
|
Also your genuine responses to other comments suggest you're serious.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 08:56 |
|
And this here is exactly the right thing.
If the articles aren’t getting enough pageviews they will disappear by themselves. If they are, there is a valid reason for them to be there, as enough people seem to enjoy the content.
It’ ll sort itself out.
Also, I’d rather have a few articles that don’t interest me every now and again, then having a site that stalls and stops to try and improve itself, by just pumping out the same thing over and over again.
![]() 05/01/2015 at 09:03 |

If you have to tell people what you wrote is funny, it’s probably not funny.

Similarly troll-y and tried calling out the writers but ended up basically getting shunned.

![]() 05/01/2015 at 09:37 |

Hey, no need to share the comment above to Oppo. The author is already getting called out on his crap as it is and this post doesn’t need anymore shit stirring. Cool? Cool.
Anyway, this thread is amusing, carry on. *popcorn*

There is no traffic bonus of any kind. I don’t look at how many pageviews or UVs any author does.

That does not make him a “bad” author. That has nothing to do with authorship. Sharing stories from other blogs and subblogs - which is a practice employed by ALL other Gawker properties - is not a writing exercise.
Also “this whole thread was satire”
